Title
One-On-One Mentor

Major Objectives
To befriend at-risk youth with our program and provide an appropriate role model in an effort to increase the child’s self-esteem and help them to develop positive relationship skills.

Qualifications: A caring, committed and dependable individual at least 18 years of age with your own transportation. Applicant must be broad minded and prepared to cope with a variety of problem situations specific to the youth (insecurities, difficulty trusting, stressful home environment, living in poverty, attitude/behavior problems, and other behaviors that will test your commitment.)

The applicant must complete all the following to become a mentor with our program:

1. Thorough and acceptable application

2. Pass background and driving records check

3. Successfully complete 1 hour interview with Coordinator

4. 4 outstanding references from individuals other than family and/or significant other that have known you more that a year and can vouch for your character

5. Proof of liability insurance on your automobile

6. Attend and participate in 3-6 hour orientation/training

A One-On-One Mentor with the Power of One has the following obligations:

Responsibilities To The Child:

1. Take the lead in maintaining the relationship. Spend a minimum of two (2) hours a week/eight (8) hours a month with your youth for a year.

2. Make all necessary attempts to make the relationship work for the entire year.

3. Do things together that are mutually enjoyable.

4. Involve the youth in deciding what activities you will do together.

5. Assure the youth that you accept them just as they are and enjoy spending time with them.

Major responsibilities to the Program:

1. Spend a minimum a two (2) hours a week/eight (8) hours a month with your youth for a year.

2. Report hours and days spent with youth for previous month by the 2nd day of each preceding month either by phone or email to the Coordinator.

3. Participate in all in-service meetings (Mentor Rap Sessions) and group activities. Both Mentor Rap Sessions and group activities are held quarterly ( 4 times a year)

4. Maintain regular contact with the Coordinator through phone and email contact.
